“Milka’s Triumph: From Tragedy to Healing”
One morning, I received a message from a man who had found a puppy in a desperate state. The poor dog was covered in dirt, and her mouth was full of ants. He had brought her home, cleaned her, and tried to feed her, but she couldn’t eat. Her lower jaw appeared to be broken. Unsure of what to do next, he reached out to us for help, and we immediately went to pick her up and take her to the hospital.
When we arrived, we could see how fragile and in pain she was. We handled her with the utmost care, hoping to get her the urgent medical attention she desperately needed. After a thorough examination and several x-rays, the doctor confirmed our fears: she had a bilateral fracture of her lower jaw, meaning both sides were broken. Her tongue was severely inflamed as well, adding to her agony. It was heartbreaking to imagine the pain she had been enduring, but at least now we had a plan to help her.
Typically, surgery would be the best option in such cases, but the surgeon advised against it due to the fractures being dangerously close to joints and nerves. Surgery could potentially result in permanent paralysis. Given the risks, we decided on a slower, more cautious approach. The surgeon manually realigned her jaw and secured it with bandages, which had to stay in place until the bones healed.
We named her Milka. Despite the discomfort of her bandages and her liquid-only diet, she remained full of life, wagging her tail and showing appreciation to everyone who helped her. The doctor warned us to minimize her movement to ensure proper healing, and after two long months, the day finally came to remove the bandages. Though her jaw wasn’t fully functional yet, the bones were healing, and she could cautiously begin eating solid food.
As I shared Milka’s progress, I received a shocking message from a man who claimed to know her story. He explained that she had been for sale, but when the buyer arrived, they discovered her jaw broken. Her previous owner claimed she had been attacked by another dog, but the vet later confirmed that her injuries were from a powerful kick or punch. After the sale fell through, the owner callously suggested euthanizing her, but Milka escaped. Thankfully, this kind-hearted man found Milka and sought help. Now, she’s on her way to becoming the happy, resilient dog she was always meant to be.
