Milia are small, yellowish or whitish cysts or papules of keratin on the skin. They usually appear on the face, around the eyes, cheeks, nose, and behind the ear, and can also appear on the hands, back, and neck. The condition is also known as sebaceous milia or milia.
The causes of milia are not fully known, but it is believed that they appear due to a degeneration of the skin’s elastic fibers and the cells that produce keratin. This degeneration is caused by excessive exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
The main symptom of milia is the appearance of small bumps, which may or may not itch and look like a cyst.
Milia can be cured and treatment is recommended by a dermatologist. Treatment options include skin cleansing and the use of certain medications.
